Information literacy is the ability to find, evaluate, and use information ethically

Introduction

This guide is designed to help users navigate the rapidly evolving world of generative AI. It offers a starting point for understanding key issues, including an overview of popular AI research tools, tips for crafting effective prompts, and resources addressing core ethical concerns.

Because AI technology is changing quickly, this guide will be updated regularly to reflect the most current information

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI tools use natural language input to create content such as text, images, audio, video, code, and more. Tools like ChatGPT are powered by large language models (LLMs), which are trained on vast amounts of text data. These models generate responses by predicting the most likely sequence of words based on patterns in the training data.

While AI-generated responses may seem thoughtful or analytical, they are not based on true understanding or reasoning. Instead, they reflect statistical patterns in the data the model was trained on. It’s important to recognize both the capabilities and limitations of these tools—especially in academic and research settings.
