APA style recommendations

Preferred terms for racial and ethnic groups change often. Over time designations can become date and/or negative. When you are referring to an group based on race or ethnicity remember to follow the guidelines of specificity and sensitivity. Use commonly accepted designations like those provided by Census categories and be sensitive to individuals preferred designation when possible. Example, some North American people of African ancestry prefer Black and others prefer African American; both are currently acceptable terms. Racial and ethnic groups are considered proper nouns and should be capitalized.
